SUMMARY:Who Do You Recommend Series with Dr. Katie Schrodt
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Katie Schrodt to this webinar series\, recommended by literacy expert Dr. Amy Elleman. In this session\, Dr. Schrodt will explore how we can help our youngest students see themselves as writers from the very beginning. Writing is one of the most demanding tasks we ask of young children\, and many students decide early that they “can’t write yet.” This session shares research and classroom practice showing that our youngest students are ready now. Drawing on a series of studies conducted in kindergarten classrooms\, Dr. Schrodt will show how brave (invented) spelling\, explicitly connected to phonics instruction\, gives children daily practice mapping speech to print while freeing them to write the words they actually want to use. Participants will see practical routines including incremental spelling reflection\, Brave Spelling Notebooks\, anchor charts\, and Power Writes\, along with asset-based ways to measure spelling growth that capture what traditional correct/incorrect scoring misses. The session will also explore how mindset instruction and Self-Regulated Strategy Development (SRSD) can support young writers across PreK\, kindergarten\, and first grade as they compose narrative\, informational\, and opinion pieces with confidence.
