Chapter Director

The Reading League, Inc. (TRL) is a nonprofit organization based in Syracuse, New York, whose mission is to advance the awareness, understanding, and use of evidence-aligned reading instruction. TRL focuses on improving literacy outcomes for ALL students by providing educators and other stakeholders with professional knowledge about the science of reading – a body of knowledge that reveals how to develop skilled reading and writing most effectively.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Chief Program Officer (CPO) Chapter Director is responsible for the oversight of the TRL Chapter program, which includes establishing and maintaining a network of Reading League chapters throughout the country, including recruiting, onboarding, and supporting chapters as they represent and carry out the mission of The Reading League (TRL) within their states or regions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with existing chapter personnel, including regular check-ins, responding to emails and phone calls, and communicating pertinent information on a timely basis
  • Nurture the formation of new chapters, including responding to requests, guiding through the establishment process, connecting potential chapter personnel, and onboarding for a successful launch
  • Deliver key presentations for chapter awareness meetings and other meetings as required
  • Keep accurate and detailed records of all incorporation paperwork, communication, and financial records
  • Develop and enforce clear guidelines, protocols, policies, and procedures as warranted
  • Oversight and support in setting up chapter websites consistent with TRL branding
  • Monitor chapter social media and events to ensure consistent messaging, branding, and content
  • Host monthly Chapter Leadership virtual and monthly-in-formation meetings
  • Plan and host annual Chapter Leadership in-person meeting (in conjunction with TRL’s annual conference)
  • Create programs and trainings to strengthen overall knowledge on a range of topics, including governance, finance, marketing, and the science of reading
  • Solicit and recruit chapter leaders, as needed
  • Attend conferences and trade shows to promote membership and chapter formation
  • Work with attorneys and TRL staff as needed to support TRL chapters
  • With TRL staff, conduct chapter audits

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in education preferred
  • At least one year of experience in project management
  • Nonprofit leadership experience preferred
  • Strong content knowledge in literacy, specifically evidence-based practices within the science of reading
  • Successful track record in management and leadership, working as part of a team specifically focused on growth and expansion
  • Experience in developing key relationships and managing communication
  • Knowledge of CRM preferred
  • Strong team-building skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across organizational functions
  • Ability to envision and convey The Reading League’s mission and embrace our values
  • Budget management experience preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Thorough knowledge of Google Workspace

SALARIES AND BENEFITS

  • Salary range $80,000 to $90,000
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance

  • Travel Required
  • Some occasional nights, weekends, and travel may be required

Development Coordinator

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Development Coordinator is a donor-facing role responsible for executing key components of The Reading League’s development strategy, with a primary focus on donor stewardship, engagement, and fundraising execution. This role supports the growth and retention of individual donors while ensuring accurate donor documentation, timely communication, and thoughtful relationship-building.

This position is ideal for a development professional who can work independently, manage multiple priorities, communicate effectively with donors, and execute strategy within established guidelines and approval processes. While this position may be performed remotely, preference will be given to candidates based in or near Syracuse, New York, who can work on-site occasionally.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review and approve gift entry and acknowledgments, and conduct donor outreach via phone and email to steward and engage supporters
  • Build and maintain detailed donor contact records, including meaningful notes and follow-up actions
  • Support the Development Director with donor communication and execution of fundraising campaigns
  • Ensure timely and accurate, and thoughtful stewardship for all gifts
  • Assist with donor segmentation and follow-up efforts as part of a broader fundraising initiative
  • Draft donor emails, appeals, and notes in alignment with The Reading League’s brand
  • Consistently and accurately manage data and workflows in TRL’s CRM system
  • Schedule meetings, organize files, assist with mailings, and support documentation for the development team
  • Track donor engagement activity

QUALIFICATIONS
Required

  • A minimum of one years’ experience in non-profit development, fundraising, or donor engagement
  • Strong organizational abilities that include planning, delegation, program development, record keeping, and task facilitation
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with diverse audiences
  • Experience with a fundraising database or CRM
  • Ability to envision and convey The Reading League’s mission and embrace our values
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion when handling donor information

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Experience supporting individual giving or annual fund programs
  • Familiarity with stewardship, renewals, and donor lifecycle concepts
  • Strong project management, organizational, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of Google Workspace and Microsoft Office

SALARY

  • $27 to $30 per hour
  • Part-time, 20 hours per week

  • Work may be performed in a typical office or a remote work environment
