The Reading League Announces Second Cohort of Educators of Color Conference Community
The Reading League (TRL) has welcomed 39 teachers, school administrators, reading experts, nonprofit founders and others for its second cohort of the Educators of Color Conference Community (ECCC).
The ECCC is a transformative nine-month, nomination-only fellowship for educators of color who are advancing literacy for culturally and linguistically diverse students. The cohort includes some of the nation’s most accomplished leaders in literacy and education, representing 13 states across the U.S.
TRL created the ECCC to increase the number of educators of color attending the annual TRL Conference, ensuring all voices are included in the ongoing national conversation about literacy. The initiative strengthens TRL’s mission to advance awareness, understanding, and use of evidence-aligned reading instruction.
During the fellowship, cohort members will work with TRL leadership while participating
Noted reading scholar Jessica Toste, Ph.D., appointed editor-in-chief of The Reading League Journal
The Reading League has named noted reading scholar Jessica Toste, Ph.D., its newest editor-in-chief of The Reading League Journal, the premier publication dedicated to connecting the science of reading with educators’ professional practices.
Toste is an associate professor in the Department of Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds research affiliations with the Meadows Center for Preventing Educational Risk and the Texas Center for Equity Promotion. She is a fellow with the Research Institute for Implementation Science in Education.
“Editing this journal is not just about managing a publication; it’s about putting rigorous, evidence-aligned research directly into the hands of practitioners,” Toste said. “I’m excited to build on the innovative features established by my predecessor, Emily Solari,
The Reading League Statement on the Elimination of the Department of Education
The Reading League is concerned about the long-term impact that eliminating the Department of Education (DOE) will have on the critical infrastructure that supports learning in the United States.
More than 50 years of federally supported research across multiple disciplines is responsible for the findings from the science of reading. That original support led to the scientific discoveries of how proficient reading and writing develop, why some students have difficulty, and the most effective ways to assess and teach literacy skills. Organizations such as The Reading League work with educators in school districts applying evidence-aligned reading instruction, yielding positive results widely embraced by state educators and lawmakers.
Reading science has long been supported as a bipartisan issue. Both red and blue states have valued its

The Reading League Announces Launch of Curriculum Navigation Reports
The Reading League (TRL), a nonprofit organization leading the advancement of evidence-aligned reading instruction, is proud to launch its Curriculum Navigation Reports. This long-awaited resource will guide educators and decision makers in reviewing and selecting curricula’s alignment with the scientific evidence base.
TRL’s Curriculum Navigation Reports are summaries of intensive curriculum examinations on the most widely used curricula in the U.S. These summary reports are unlike existing curriculum reviews:
- They are based on The Reading League’s Curriculum Evaluation Guidelines (CEGs), which are derived directly from scientific research
- They highlight any non-aligned practices as “red flag” practices that may hinder student progress
Educators have lacked a reliable resource to help discern the full scope of evidence-aligned practices in curricula.
Response to Governor Hochul’s Back to Basics Plan to Improve Reading Proficiency
The Reading League (TRL) is a national nonprofit organization headquartered in Syracuse, NY. Our mission is to advance the awareness, understanding, and use of evidence-aligned reading instruction. All of the founding members of TRL had been educators in New York State. They taught in its public schools, and they prepared pre-service educators in its public and private universities. As individuals, chance experiences led them to learn about the science of reading (SoR). As a result, they spent time and effort trying to apply SoR findings in their day-to-day jobs because they had witnessed the potential to close reading achievement gaps when instructional practice is aligned with the evidence base. Little of this was familiar to or accepted by their colleagues in New
