THE DEFINITION

What is the science of reading?

The science of reading is a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing.

This research has been conducted over the last five decades across the world, and it is derived from thousands of studies conducted in multiple languages. The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties.

The science of reading is derived from researchers from multiple fields:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Communication Sciences
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Education
  • Implementation Science
  • Linguistics
  • Neuroscience
  • School Psychology

A FIRM DEFINITION

Science of Reading: Defining Guide

The science of reading has culminated in a preponderance of evidence to inform how proficient reading and writing develop; why some have difficulty; and how we can most effectively assess and teach and, therefore, improve student outcomes through prevention of and intervention for reading difficulties.

Although the scientific evidence base for effective reading has existed for decades, the term “the science of reading” has gained traction in the last few years, potentially leading to misunderstandings. The Science of Reading: Defining Guide provides a firm definition of what the science of reading is, what it is not, and how all stakeholders can understand its potential to transform reading instruction.

Defining Movement

DEFINING MOVEMENT COALITION

We believe in a future where a collective focus on applying the science of reading through teacher and leader preparation, classroom application, and community engagement will elevate and transform every community, every nation, through the power of literacy.

What is the Defining Movement Coalition?

In September 2020, numerous reading science advocates from various organizations began meeting weekly to consider the value of crafting a common, simple definition of the science of reading. We felt that clarifying the term, along with providing a rationale for doing so, would benefit all stakeholders in the education sector. We believed that a clear understanding of what the science of reading is, what it is not, and what is meant by the word ‘science’ would reduce misconceptions and promote proper use of practices aligned with the findings from the science of reading. Our Defining Movement coalition’s sole intent is to protect the integrity of these findings so that their promise of successful reading outcomes for almost all children is realized.
