Reading and writing are typically researched, taught, and resourced as separate domains; and yet the science shows they are deeply interconnected, drawing on shared and distinct cognitive mechanisms.

Dr. Kim  will introduce an integrated framework for understanding literacy development, drawing on her forthcoming book Cultivating the Reader and Writer: Teaching Literacy as an Integrated Science (Guilford Press, 2026). The talk introduces three original theoretical models, DIER (reading), DIEW (writing), and the Interactive Dynamic Literacy model (reading-writing connections), and their implications for teaching and assessment for students from diverse backgrounds.

We know you will enjoy and learn from Dr. Kim’s expertise and guidance in this area. Interested people will be invited to an upcoming book study group.
