The Reading League has appointed Amanda Nickerson as its director of educator preparation partnerships, a position focused on aligning teacher training programs nationwide with research-based literacy instruction methods.
Nickerson will oversee the Syracuse-based nonprofit’s national strategy for working with educator preparation programs to incorporate the science of reading into their curricula. The goal is to ensure new teachers enter classrooms equipped to provide evidence-based literacy instruction.
The organization, which operates globally, selected Nickerson based on her experience spanning teaching, coaching, consulting and higher education. Most recently, she worked as the K-12 literacy technical assistance specialist for the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, where she oversaw the statewide rollout of the Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant. In that role, she provided professional development and coached regional specialists throughout Ohio.
Nickerson has also contributed to academic research examining how the science of reading intersects with multi-tiered systems of support and gifted education. Her research has appeared in Gifted Child Quarterly.
She holds a Doctor of Education from Mount St. Joseph University, where she concentrated in reading science, and earned a master’s degree in literacy curriculum and instruction.
