About the Workshop
This two-day virtual workshop introduces the research-based Knowledge Acquisition and Transformation (KAT) framework, developed by Dr. Kay Wijekumar and colleagues at Texas A&M University.
Designed for PreK–12 teachers, coaches, and instructional leaders, this practice-based experience provides evidence-aligned strategies to strengthen comprehension instruction, leverage existing materials, and build student motivation and achievement. You will leave with practical tools and a clear, actionable path to improve reading outcomes for every learner.

Workshop Schedule
Two-Day Overview:
Day 1: KAT Introduction, core constructs of reading comprehension, model lessons & practice opportunities with a focus on expository texts.
Day 2: Multiple model lessons & practice opportunities with a focus on fiction texts and poetry, teacher resource library overview, reflection & questions.

Dr. Kausalai (Kay) Wijekumar is a nationally recognized literacy researcher, educator, and advocate dedicated to advancing reading and writing success for all learners. As the leader of LiteracyIO and the Director of the Center for Urban School Partnerships at Texas A&M University, she has transformed literacy outcomes for children and adults across diverse learning populations through her evidence-based work. Through innovative research, intelligent tutoring systems, and professional development, Dr. Wijekumar continues to drive meaningful change in literacy education worldwide.
